Reducing uncertainty in flood risk
It is now widely acknowledged that gauge record length in most catchments in Australia is insufficient to ensure reliable estimates of flood frequency analysis (FFA). We are the first team in Australia who provides the full suite of services required to incorporate palaeoflood (old flood deposits) data into revised estimates of flood recurrence and magnitude. After we have obtained a longer timeline of past floods, we use hydrological modelling to revise flood frequency estimates. This approach dramatically reduces the uncertainty associated with flood estimates. This provides increased confidence around flood planning – critical for state and local governments, water resource managers, emergency services and insurance companies.
